Finding An Enjoyable Cairo Holiday

By Larry Jones

Finding an enjoyable Cairo holiday is easy enough these days, considering how attractively-priced leisure travel to many parts of the world now is. This is mostly due to the worldwide drop-off in such travel because of the challenging global economy. Holidays to Cairo, which is in close proximity to history in the form of pyramids and the ancient pharaohs of old Egypt, can be very nice, in terms of price.

Cairo itself - known familiarly as 'the Triumphant City' - is one of the largest urban centers in the world. It is Egypt's administrative capital and is near to almost all the best-preserved pyramids of the ancient kingdom. The most famous of these structures lay at Giza, along with perhaps one of the most well-known man-made statues or icons in the world, the Sphinx.

There's plenty more to Cairo, though, than just those pyramids and the Sphinx. The area is dotted with ancient temples, Christian churches, Muslim monumental structures and the Museum of Antiquities, which houses the finest collection of ancient Egyptian statuary and other objects in the world. Also, the city itself is pretty much up-and-running on a 24 hour basis.

A Cairo holiday is probably one of the single best ways to see both ancient and modern Egypt at the same time. Historic structures nestle right up against super-modern plazas and shopping venues and the streets are filled with bazaars and open-air markets of almost every type. The capital city of the country is also known as a center of the arts and culture. The Cairo Opera House is just one example of this fact.

Known also as "The Paris of the Nile, " Cairo is a cosmopolitan city where people from all over the world mix easily with each other. Summer months can be a little warm, but not overly so, and the region is appreciated for its temperate weather and sunny days which are a fact almost year-round. Hotel accommodations range from inexpensive hostels to truly world-class palaces.

Cairo has existed in one form or another for thousands of years. It has one foot firmly planted in its ancient and glorious past and the other moving confidently through the 21st century. For anybody desiring to see both facets, a Cairo holiday can be one of the single best ways in which to do a little bit of both.
